QUADRIC
POTENCY – AN INNOVATION WORTH CONSIDERATION
Quadric potency, the Second degree of potency, introduced by Dr
Kadiri Koya of Kannur, Kerala is a new scale of potency prepared in
accordance with the directions given by Dr Hahnemann for the preparation
of LM potency. The difference being that here, instead of the 3rd
centesimal base potency used by Dr Hahnemann for the preparation of
LM potency, centesimal potencies like 30 200 1M 10M 50M and Cm
are used as base potency for further potentisation. The resultant
potencies are named after the base potency and range up to /6 on each
scale. For example the first potency prepared from 30c is named 30/1,
the second one 30/2 and so on up to 30/6. Potencies out of 200 are named
200/1 – 200/6.
Since the introduction of potentisation as a means of increasing
the power of medicine while reducing its physical presence homeopathic
profession has seen three main scales of potency. Decimal, Centesimal
and LM potencies. While each of them had their brand of followers and
distracters, many among us are willing to go un prejudiced on potency,
using them to suite the case. To such open minded homeopaths who are not
bound to any such scale of potency, Quadric potency is indeed an
innovation worth consideration.
The merit of this new potency on its theoretical front is the
fact that it is not presented as a new theory. It is only an extension
of Hahnemann’s own directions put to practice at a different level,
something which Hahnemann himself would have attempted had he lived
longer enough.
Quadric potency while unleashing much more energy from
conventional centesimal levels, provide more flexibility at each level
like 30, 200, 1000 etc and the serial use of potency ranging from /1 to
/6 we have minor variation in power instead of sudden jump we are forced
to make from 30 to 200 and from there to 1000 etc. As we all have
experienced un expected and at times unwanted aggravations and responses
from such jumps, we have a good case to make use of quadric potency and
see the effect.
While it is claimed that Quadric potency can be repeated more
frequently, in my experience I have found that even while we use it in
the conventional way, waiting and watching the flowering action of the
remedy. It has helped me a lot in unleashing curative energy in a
controlled way, especially when using such centripetal remedies as
Graphites which many fear to prescribe due to its ability to force out.
Dr Koya has to his credit a small book on quadric potency where
in he has attempted to explain the logic behind the new potency,
compared the efficiency and superiority of the new scale over the older
in existence. “Quadric Potency, An answer to present posological
problems” is extensively sprinkled by quotes from Hahnemann to bring
home the need for innovations and substantiate the claim of the new
potency.
While it is for the great masters of the art to put this new
scale in use and judge it’s efficiency, Dr Koya need to be
congratulated for the innovative approach to potentisation at a time
when the profession is finding it difficult to think beyond Hahnemann.
